In Resistance to Realism
She stands for hours in this institute
of art searching for paintings
that contain poems for her to write
under titles such as Listening to
the Evening Through the Ears of van Gogh
& Sipping Espresso Flower Tea
with Georgia O’Keefe
non-present exhibits featuring the likes
of Augusta Savage, Faith Ringold, & Kerry James Marshall
not useful for her agenda
Fifth generation tablet in hand,
she examines canvases that will
require her to do little more
than transcribe their imagery
using her virtual keypad
while anticipating praise
to come from members
of her MFA & celebratory
acceptances from Poetry
& other leading magazines
before her book launches
in the offices of Wooden Nickel Press,
unmindful of bombs, targeted at
Ukraine, carried aloft by gales
from that old Western Wind
now bursting in air
over North Broadway
working their way over
to Austin Highway before
arriving to showcase their effects at
that Alamo Heights Fine Arts Museum
where the only art that will survive,
the Stallworthy edition of
Wilfred Owen’s poems,
sticks up from the backpack
a fleeing janitor left behind.
