Most of us don’t think of poets doing scholarly research, but these are just a few of the books I’m in the process of reading for a poetry project that deals with San Antonio’s African American history, as well as the history of Black people in the Longhorn State.
About Me:
I write about myself today as someone who has become a liminal being in American life, but early on I had a very different life. I lived in a Chicago community on the city’s West Side and as a community poet I was deeply involved in that community’s life, but then something happened. As a community poet, I felt the need to enter the university to develop my skills as a writer. I succeeded in earning degrees, but that led me away from the world of my youth and into one job after another teaching in mainstream universities where I never fit. Over the years my writing changed from works about a community to works from someone without a community to call his own. You might confuse me for being what Ralph Ellison once characterized as an invisible man, but I am quite visible—too visible for some. I once wrote about myself as an inbetween man, but that name and concept got picked up by others over the years and it lost it vibrancy. After realizing the times I have literally mention liminality in chapters of a memoir that I wrote, it made sense for me to change that work’s title to Narrative of a Liminal Man.
