A Minority in a Minority City

I grew up in a Black and White world, one in which, or so I thought, lines were clearly drawn and one’s identity lay on one side or the other depending on the color of your skin.

More defining than skin color was the one-drop rule.

Today, I live in a place where lines are not drawn the same way because the dominant group, population wise, is Brown. However, dominant power structures still remain in White hands despite the majority of Brown politicians in city government. Nevertheless, this is a minority city in which I often hear the Spanish language spoken more than English.

Unfortunate for me, I don’t speak Spanish.
