I grew up in a Black and White world, one in which, or so I thought, lines were clearly drawn and one’s identity lied on one side of the other depending on the color of your skin or what used to be known as the one drop rule. Today, I live in a place where lines are not drawn the same way because the dominant group, population wise, is Brown. However, dominant power structures still remain in White hands despite the majority of Brown politicians in city government. Nevertheless, this is a minority city in which I hear the Spanish language spoken at times more than I hear English.
